Our interconnectedness beautifully grounds us in our shared origins with all life on this spiralling rock through space. This connection spans humanities triumphs, and indeed, atrocities caused and directed by us, as we affect all species and natural systems with the butterflies we let loose. Our favouring to make decisions for profit and greed over ethics may not be the demise of life on this planet, but it will be the end of our part within it, dragging many innocents with us.
Some extraction practices are still necessary to establish a global, circular, renewable system that effectively recycles existing resources. However, many current methods are both redundant and highly destructive. These industries should be helping lift countries out of poverty and, at a minimum, ensure the safety of workers and protect surrounding environments. But they’re not. Instead, people and ecosystems are continually exploited for the profit of a few—a dominating mindset that prolongs widespread suffering and deepens damage with consequences that will soon affect everyone.
Every thing grows in the top soil – those precious 6 inches of soil. Without it we cannot adequately sequester carbon back to where it belongs, and we cannot grow food. We currently have 40 years left of topsoil as we choose to keep depleting it, in our ignorance perhaps, but majoritively our choices, and actions.
Of course, it is possible to regenerate desertified areas, but it takes patience, empathy, and intention to understand our observations of the nature we are a part of. As is needed with all conflict bereft of this…
